O'Reilly and Associates 5th annual Open Source Convention was here in Portland July 7-11, 2003. For those who don't know, O'Reilly is the book publisher that publishes all of "animal" books - the books on software, including Linux, Unixes, open source software, etc, that have black and white etches of animals on them. You've probably seen them around.
We asked the OSCon folks if they were interested in having us as an exhibit, and they were nice enough to arrange a free booth for us.
Brian, Markus, and Andrew set up what was essentially the USENIX display - launch tower, both rockets, and the working avionics system complete with ATV transmitter and receiver. Ian, Katharine, Paul and James came through the next two days to lend a hand talking with people.
We probably talked with several hundred people, although it was hard to tell: for two solid days from 10:00am - 4:30pm we talked with people. I'd say there was only about an hour plus of downtime the entire two days... it seemed to be a very well attended conference. Some of the highlights of the conference were meeting several new potential team members and also a fellow from "Nautamatic Marine Systems", which does kalman-filtered autopilot systems for fishing boats - very, very impressive stuff.
Thanks to the volunteers who helped out, and thanks again to O'Reilly and Associates for giving letting us exhibit for free, and handling all the logistics and financial details that followed.
Here's the coordination information from the conference for posterity and potentially next year.
