The Bare Minimum System
You need some kind of a clock oscillator:
- Internal clocks: 12CXXX has an internal 4MHz RC oscillator
- Saves a pin on an 8pin package! Very Cool.
- External clocks - Can run from DC to max. frequency
- External clock can be RC (!), crystals, ceramic resonators or clock chips
- Certain flavors of the 12CXXX can go up to 10MHz but most go to 4MHz
- Most 16CXXX can go to 20MHz
- 17CXXX can run up to 33MHz
And you need some power:
- Different PICs can operate from 2.5V - 5.5V (see Data Sheets)
- New 16HVXX can directly use up to 14V! (Great for direct 9V or 12V battery hook ups)
