PSAS/ UhmwPeTape

UHMW Polyethylene Tape

We're using Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW PE) as the dielectric in our patch antenna. Here's som info on what we're using.

Manufacturer/Distributor

Glenn's PE density measurement 2004/08/02

Part A: Raw UHMW PE (No adhesive)

ADG: removed adhesive by lifting a corner and slowly peeling - clearly has a mylar film in the acrylic adhesive.

Piece A = 2.005 +/- 0.005 in x 2.008 +/- 0.005 in x 0.062 +/- 0.001 in = 0.250 +/- 0.005 in^3

Step Time (PDT) Description Weight (g)
A1 1259 Weigh boat A 6.3840
A2 1300 Tare boat A 0.0000
A3 1301 Weigh boat + "A" UHMW PE piece (plain, no sticky) 3.6795

Assumed scale +/- 0.0001 g error. Chose to take worst case error (addition, not quadrature addition).

*Density: 0.520 +/- .011 oz/in^3 (0.900 +/- .019 g/cm^3) *

Part B: UHMW PE with adhesive film

Piece B = 2.000 +/- 0.005 in x 4.020 +/- 0.005 in x 0.068 +/- 0.002 in = 0.547 +/ 0.02 in^3

Step Time (PDT) Description Weight (g)
B1 1302 Weigh boat B 6.2947
B2 1303 Tare boat B 0.0000
B3 1303 Weigh boat + "B" UHMW PE piece (with paper) 8.6372
B4 130340 Remove the paper from "B" and put BOTH!! the paper and PE back in boat 8.6298
B5.0 130400 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6293
B5.1 130430 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6293
B5.2 130500 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6294
B5.3 130530 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6293
B5.4 130600 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6294
B5.5 130630 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6293
B5.6 130700 Look for VOC's evaporating 8.6293
C1 Remove Boat B + B + Paper -6.2947

Of course, we forgot to weigh just the PE. whoops. So on 2004/08/03:

Step Time (PDT) Description Weight (g)
B1 1231 Weigh boat B 6.2952
B2 1232 Tare boat B 0.0000
B3 1233 Weigh boat + "B" UHMW PE piece (without paper) 8.1215

Assumed scale +/- 0.0001 g error. Chose to take worst case error (addition, not quadrature addition).

*Density: 0.524 +/- 0.017 oz/in^3 (0.907 +/- .03 g/cm^3) *
