Hybrid Goals 1. Complete lab scale GOX hybrid 1.a. Crunch data from latest firings determine whether chamber pressure and thrust match target values 1.b. Measure GOX flow rates to calibrate orifice flows 1.c. Plot chamber pressure and thrust versus GOX flow rates and compare to theoretical predictions 1.d. Revise GOX orifice and rocket nozzle designs as necessary to achieve target values for chamber pressure and thrust 1.e. Determine if specific impulse of GOX/paraffin hybrid matches claimed performance, is it a competitive technology? 1.f. If specific impulse is too low, time to make a decision: Do we attempt to refine the paraffin hybrid to improve specific impulse? Or, do we abandon the paraffin hybrid for another, more proven technology? 2. Once GOX/paraffin hybrid performance is proven, seek outside funding for development of LOX/paraffin hybrid 3. Convert lab scale GOX hybrid into lab scale LOX hybrid Work out any performance issues of LOX versus GOX Reproduce performance of GOX hybrid using LOX: Target chamber pressure = 500 psi Target thrust = 50 lbs 4. Design/build flight article LOX hybrid Target thrust = 1500 lbs Target burn time = 15 seconds Target construction costs <= $1000 Target consumables costs per flight <= $100 5. Revise the fuel grain construction 5.a. Replace cardboard with insulating, perhaps ablative material which will permit burning paraffin completely to the fuel grain outer boundary 5.b. Ease the insertion into and removal from the combustion chamber 5.c. This task can be completed as part of step 1 or step 2 Additional Comments: Be cautious about starting a commercial enterprise to fund these developments by selling other things, such as consumer-sized hybrids. A commercial enterprise will require a great deal of time to run. It will also open us to liability issues. These issues are acceptable if our goal is to create a start-up business to sell consumer hybrids but they're a painful distraction if our primary objective is to build a large, flight-article LOX hybrid. We need to be clear about our primary objectives and then not get distracted by peripheral concerns. Selling other things is okay, if we agree that's our primary objective.
