MIL STD 1553 Avionics Bus Links

The MIL STD 1553 bus is an avionics communications bus specified by the US Air Force in 1973. It's widely used in current-day commercial and military aircraft, and is also found in some spacecraft. A key feature of this bus is it's fault tolerance, and redundancy.

The bus incorporates a dual-redundant 70-85 ohm shielded twisted copper pair bus connected with BNC-type twinax connectors, using differential signaling, usually with transformer coupled isolation at each bus node. The data is Manchester II bi-phase encoded into 16 bit words. The bus topology consists of up to 31 nodes made up of Bus Controllers (BC), Remote Terminals (RT), and Monitor (MT) nodes. There can be multiple bus controllers, and a node can perform more than one of the three functions. The bus is considered to be deterministic, with confirmation in 8 to 12 us, and a data rate of 1-2 Mb/s. Messages on the bus are of three types, command, data, and status.

MIL-STD-1773 is essentially the same bus system except the copper twisted pair is replaced with optical fiber.
